A man looks into the control element of an ELCO heating system.

Venice – Queen of the Adriatic

Everyone in the world has heard or read about the fascinating city in the lagoon in Italy. More than 30 million tourists visit Venice every year. The city consists of 119 islands, which are connected by 150 canals and more than 400 bridges. In summer, temperatures here regularly climb to over 30°C. But how are the houses and legendary palaces heated in winter?

After the dramatic flood of 1966, which caused massive environmental damage due to diesel and heating oil leaking from tanks, a gas pipeline was laid at great expense. From 1973, the citizens of the old town of Venice and the islands were obliged to use the methane gas supplied through the pipeline for heating.

The methane distribution network is currently around 180 kilometres long and supplies approximately 55,000 users.

The Venice World Capital of Sustainability Foundation was established on 14 March 2022. The aim of the project is to ensure the city's genuine environmental, economic, technological and social sustainability.

An important goal is to replace existing systems with heat pumps (25-30% of the existing systems). In addition, the use of biomethane instead of fossil methane and the use of hydrogen mixed with fossil methane/biomethane is to be significantly expanded.

ELCO is part of this transformation, which is so important for the city. After all, climate change poses a massive threat to the lagoon. Rising sea levels require very high investments to protect the city from flooding.

Among other things, we are entrusted with the maintenance of a thermal power plant. The plant consists of three cascaded THISION L EVO units and provides a religious institute in the Dorso Duro district in the historic centre of Venice with pleasant warmth.

ELCO thanks our partner Tecnofon, which offers installation services, regular maintenance and initial repairs.
